Positioning it properly in your hand, drawing the knife through the sharpening rods, and determining how much use of the coarse rods to use before switching to the fine rods. It's definitely subjective. You can use it until the knife is as sharp as you want it. For portability and convenience, it sure beats carrying around one of the sharpening rods in a carrying case. And the price was very affordable.
Portability
Make case heavier (metal?) so that it is more stable during the sharpening process
