Fan
Wednesday, October 10, 2012Powerful, too noisy for use in a living space; perfect for a garage or attic.
Easy to install
Air King Window Fan
Thursday, October 04, 2012Product shipment was quick and condition were perfect. Product is as advertised. Just wish it moved a bit more air with less fan noise, but that's a design improvement that AirKing will have to make.
Air King Window Fan
Wednesday, August 15, 2012Ventilation with the Air King window fan will allow us to reduce costs associqated with the air conditioiner.
Thumbs Up On The Air King 9166
Wednesday, August 08, 2012The fan works very well in the upstairs loft of our home. It moves a lot of air and very effectively cools our upstairs. Our window was wider that what the fan would support so I built a custom frame to hold the fan into the window. We live in Colorado where the evening air is nice and cool. This fan quickly sucks out the hot air in the upstairs and replaces it with cool, outside air.
Three speed with both exhaust and intake modes, it really moves a lot of air
The noise level is pretty high, and support for windows wider than 38" would have saved me some time
Moves A Lot Of Air, But Blade Unbalanced
Thursday, July 26, 2012This fan moves a lot of air. It seems strong and well built. Installation on the interior of the window jam was easy with provided template. Only complaint, and it's relatively important, is that the fan blade is unbalanced, resulting in vibration of the whole unit. So much so that it shakes the house at half speed, and I won't run it at full speed is. I am going to attempt to balance it myself. Also, if your window is towards the lower end of the allowable size, consider getting the 16 in model. For my window, the fan is taller than the opening, losing some space for air, and making it difficult to open and close the window behind the unit.
Moves a lot of air
Balance the blade to reduce vibration!
Air King Window Fan
Wednesday, July 11, 2012Trial ran the fan by holding fan in place so after hearing how loud it was, so I didn't install the fan due to the noise level.
The fan is very noisey even in the lowest setting, and it didn't move the air that I thought it would
Noise level needs to improve, seems to vibrate alot
Air King Fan
Tuesday, June 19, 2012Product was as advertised, arrived even more quickly than I expected. Installation was simple, and noise is about what I expected. Adding a little rubber weatherstripping around the frame helps a lot. Install this in a window far away from the bedrooms, set it on exhaust and draw the cool night air in. I live in the high desert of New Mexico where the daytime temps often get to 95, and I haven't turned on my air conditioner yet (now mid-june). If you have cool night-time temps where you live, this is the product to get.
Really works - far more powerful than cheap plastic window fans.
Better fit between the adjustable sides and the main frame. It works fine, but could be more precise.
Air King 20" 3-Speed Whole House Fan 9166
Tuesday, May 29, 2012Yes, it is a bit noisy but I run it on low. Works great and keeps my 1836 square foot house cool running on low and I am in the desert. I run it in the evening when it cools down. Can't beat an Air King! I do wish it had an oil fitting like my first one did back in the 80's but the one I just replaced has run since 2004.
Quality, performance
Provide consumers with a way to add a few drops of oil annually so it will last longer
Whole House Window Fan
Tuesday, April 03, 2012This fan replaces a old window fan with 20" deep pitched blades. The old fan moved so much air that I rarely ran the fan above low. Unfortunately the old fan did not have a protective grill and it nearly "diced" a cat that tried to jump into the window while the fan was running. Fortunately the cat lived but I decided to replace the fan. The (new) Air King fan does not move as much air as the previous one. At the highest speed, it seems to move air at a rate between low and medium on the old one. And the Air King fan is a lot noisier.
The installation was relatively easy (after locating and installing the mounting screws). You simply hang the fan on the mounting screws and tighten the housing screws. The fan has both intake and exhaust settings.
The housing has gaps between the main frame and the extensions to mount to the window frame which get larger the tighter you tighten the screws. The fan is also noisy and does not move as much air as my previous fan. Overall, the fan is usable for the small house in which it is installed.
More Than a Bargain
Tuesday, March 27, 2012Our attic unit went out late last summer. We ran it in the spring till it just got too hot, then the AC, and again in the fall till no longer needed, so it was a real hardship when we lost it. We are not in physical condition, and could not afford a new unit or installation. So we took a chance on this unit. It took about 30 minutes (and 2 pairs of hands because it's heavy!) to install and it works BETTER than the old attic unit! I believe if we got a second one we would hardly need the AC at all because it really moves the air!
Air Mover
Tuesday, March 27, 2012This moves a lot of air. I don't have sash windows so I installed it at the bottom of my door leading to the courtyard and filled the remaining space at the top with plywood. It's noisy, but what can you expect? Better than refrigerated conditioning. It arrived two days after ordering.
Amount of air moved
Have the switch go from "off" to level "1" instead of "3"
Home Owner
Tuesday, March 20, 2012This is one great fan. Please don't spend money for those small twin blade fan, you will be just wasting your money.
It moves the air fast and keeps your house cool to save on the A/C bill. It was a breeze to install. This is no toy, this fan means business.
The only problem I had was some vibration noise between the grill and motor housing. A small piece of folded paper shoved beween grill and housing took care of the problem. Wish it had an thermostat made into the fan, so I wouldn't had to spend another $45 for one that plugs into the power cord.
Noisy But Moves Lots of Air
Tuesday, February 14, 2012Not for a house where you will hear the noise. Great for warehouse or attic. Moved lots of air, cooled off the house, could not stand the noise or the cord coming across the face of the fan
Moved lots of air, functionally was great
Way too noisy, cord coming agross te face of the fan was unsightly
Air King Whole House Window Fan
Tuesday, November 22, 2011Wished I had found this fan years ago, it fit perfect in our window, was easy to install, and performs great. Well designed. I had been using a regular large round fan that was designed to sit on the floor. The CFM of the new Air King fan is way more than any off the shelf fan, enough to easily pull fresh-air thru-out our house in the summer (evenings-night) once it cools down outside (we then turn off our central AC). I did not find it too loud considering what is and does, although I did place 3/4" foam weather strip between the unit and the window frame any where it makes contact which both seals and stops any possibility of vibration noise. I plan on ordering a 2nd for future use. Having once been a HVAC tech, I highly recommend this for house cooling/fresh air! The only complaint I have is whomever packaged the unit (manufacturer) did so with dirty hands, hence dirty hand prints all over the fan, which I had to clean off. Not a big deal but a little irritating. Still a perfect product for our application.
Great!
Tuesday, November 15, 2011So pleased we ordered a second one after testing it.
Price. Is nice looking, good color. Really moved the air.
Not as noisey but a fair trade off for really moving the air.
A Little Too Noisy For My Taste
Friday, September 23, 2011While the fan really pulls air through our home the rattling noise sometimes offsets the benefit of the cool air and we must turn the fan off. The rattling noise can be supressed if I hold the motor casing on the outside but it is not very practical to have to hold the motor to supress the vibrating metal sound the fan makes as it is working. If someone were to put this fan in a basement where no person resides it could pull the air through the home however if you do not have a basement or someone lives in the basement the vibrating/rattling noise does not allow for a quiet nights sleep. We only use the fan for a short while after coming home to cool the house however if the store was more conveniently located to my home I would have returned it or exchanged it for a quieter window fan. On a positive note, the lowest setting #1 is strong enough to pull air through my home to allow the house to cool within about an hour so we do not have to tolerate the noise too long. My friend also bought one of these fans and he tells me his is much quieter than mine, so I may have possibly purchased defective fan.
Strong motor and pulls a lot of air.
Vibration suppression to quiet the loud noise it emits in our home.
Defective Product
Friday, September 16, 2011We purchased the 20" 3-Speed Whole House Window fan May 2011. Installed and used the unit for several days and then it stopped working. Contacted Drillspot and they sent us a brand new fan. Used that for several days and the same thing happened, the unit stopped working. Not sure why this happened only to think there is a defective motor in this model. Drillspot refunded our money, but I still am out a fan.
Wind
Friday, September 16, 2011Excellent. I'm cooled down now.
Air volume
Not too noisey but a bit quieter would even be better
Sucks like a Banchee
Thursday, September 15, 2011On exhaust low it pulls enough air through the house to make you want to find a blanket. REAL BIG thing is the blades are metal (thank god). It's not quiet by any stretch of the imagination. The plastic housing really should have been a different type of plastic. It's too hard and too thin. It will pop and click and rattle. One hint is to install weather strip on your window sill so that it has a cushion to rest on instead of the wood sill. Adding the foam strip where the metal sides contacts the widow trim helps keep the rattle to a minimum.
It has metal blades and MOVES air.
The means of mounting could have been thought out alot more, come on, it's a fan not a rocket ship!
Get Past the Noise
Tuesday, September 13, 2011The fan is loud so I installed it on the first floor. Opened windows in the rooms we wanted to cool. Works good! Installing it in my style of windows was challenging but the task was worth it. The Air King moves some serious air!
I liked buying a reasonably priced fan and installing it quickly. Instead of buying whole house fan and taking time to install it. No air conditioner or ceiling fan in each room just one Air King!
The rubber pieces were laying loose in the bottom of the box and one of the set screws for the expandable sides was missing.
Shake, Rattle, & Roll
Friday, September 09, 2011Drillspot was very fast at shipping my fan. No complaints about ordering and shipping. I bought this fan to place in a window in my house to help cool the house during the cool evening so I wouldn't have to run the air conditioner. I read comments about the noise but couldn't imagine it being really that bad, but it is. I placed it in a garage window for the dogs instead of a window for us. It is still terribly loud. It vibrates though the walls into the house. It is hard to be out in the garage working or with the grandchilden when they are playing in there with all of the noise. My husband HATES it and doesn't think it is as effective as my other movable fans and the noise drives him nuts (& he is hard of hearing). I feel it moves the air pretty well but not as much as I had expected. It seems to be fairly sturdy except for the rattles. It is a good fit in the window and I like being able to close the window without removing the fan.
I like being able to close the window without removing the fan.
Find a way to make the fan quieter without loosing any of the air volume (even better, increase the air volume).
Air King 3 speed Window Fan
Tuesday, September 06, 2011The fan was very good at moving air. But it is very noisy when placed in an active part of the house. We placed it in a room next door to the master bedroom. It was like flying a jet plane. It would have been good if it was on the far end of the house. Perhaps if they would have used plastic or composite blades it would have been quieter.
Moved a lot of air.
Too noisy in or near active rooms
9166 Window Fan
Saturday, September 03, 2011Fan failed and replacement failed after few uses.
CFM
Needs built-in thermostat
Icky
Saturday, September 03, 2011Not sure how this fan gets such good ratings. I have had 3 of them now and they are unbearably noisy even upstairs behind closed doors - vibration shakes the house. The last one I got has to go back, besides the usual noise there is something rattling and it is even noisier. They do move a lot of air. Mounting is not the best and the housing is poorly designed. One died after exactly a year and manufactured went ahead and replaced it even though the warranty was up - that was nice of them. From what I understand the model before this one was much better quality - but this is what our world is coming to - everything as cheap as possible. Watch it with this fan - I suggest looking elsewhere - although I did that and could not find anything like this fan in the size and window aspect.
Moves a lot of air
Needs to be way less vibration and noise - I am talking half would be still bothersome
The Fan That Can
Wednesday, August 31, 2011The cost of electricity here in So. Cal. gives cause to consider alternatives. Which led me to this fan. I wanted to clear out stuffy warm air in the mornings and was using my air conditioner to do it. I had only one room that I could use to install the fan because I have extra glass on the outside of almost all my windows. So opening them for ventillation was not an option. This being a 1200 sq. ft. home, the fan evacuates inside air very quickly with just the front door ajar, and 2 in-door screened windows open in the rear exit. I would suggest not to run this fan with a screen in the way because the screen will reduce the air flow and make your screen get ugly in a very short time. You don't want ugly screens. Your Queen would not be pleased.
It exhausts the air very quickly in my 1300 sq. ft. home. I only use it on 'high' in the morning for about 2 hours. The noise, which isn't loud (in my estimation), and because of the fan's location, is not an issue. And I use it on high to get exhausted
Good Large Fan for House Window
Wednesday, August 31, 2011My old one was broken, I ordered the same reversible whole house 20 inch window Air King fan via your company. It is just what I wanted and needed. Prompt on line service. Prompt 3 day mailing/shipping at no fee and credit card payment streamlined the process.
Efficient and what I wanted as to size and capability
Not a thing. I expected a good product and got it. at a good price. I don't care about the loud roar when it runs on high speed it works just fine for my purposes. Number of speeds makes this a very versatile fan and can be exhaust or intake blowing fan so well worth the price.
Window Fan
Tuesday, August 23, 2011Good price and arrived on time.
Forgot to measure window and it still fit
Excellent Service and Product
Tuesday, August 23, 2011It's a high quality fan -- runs a high speed so moves a lot of air. Kind of noisy, but that's unavoidable.
I put my fan in a first floor window and want to let it run all night. They should make it so you can install the fan securely in the window -- ie, so it can not be removed by an intruder from the outside, while allowing it to be removed easily from the inside
Great Service
Tuesday, August 23, 2011The product is just what I wanted. The service was phenominal---I ordered on-line Sunday, and the item was delivered on Tuesday---Amazing!
Stay'n Cool!!!!!
Tuesday, August 23, 2011It was perfect just what I thought it would be. It keeps my very large work shop pleasent, even on 100 degree days the shop is comfortable. The fan is quiet for the size of the motor. To sum it up I would buy it again.
Flat Roof Solution
Tuesday, August 23, 2011With two months in a row of record electric bills I decided it was time for an attic fan. I have a house with a flat roof so I couldn't install a traditional attic fan. The Air King Whole House Window fan is the next best thing. My windows are wider and shorter than most, so about 1/4 of the fan is blocked by the upper pane of glass but this thing will still create a very strong breeze through the house. When you turn it on high it sounds like a fighter jet spinning up and takes a good 10 seconds to get up to speed. It's just unreal! I use it on low because the higher speeds just aren't necessary. This thing is amazing. It is a bit loud, but that's to be expected on a beast this large. With the fan on exhaust and a window open on the opposite end of the house, I've been able to cool my house to within three degrees of the outside temperature. If you have a flat roof or don't want the bother of an attic fan installation, this whole-house window unit is for you.
Great Fan
Tuesday, August 23, 2011I didn't really think we'd find a fan that was as good as our previous window fan that we'd had for many years. BUT, this fan is outstanding. The blades are balanced really well which always bugged me about the previous fan, it vibrated on high. Pulls air through our entire 100 year old New England house, it really moves a lot of air. I'm really picky and would not write a review like this unless this product really impressed me! Buy the fan!
Power and ability to move a lot of air
Average Rating For Fan
Tuesday, August 23, 2011The fan works great; I put it in a window in my loft, and it has made a big difference in the air flow throughout my house; (1200 sq feet) however, it is VERY noisy. The directions to set it up are hard to follow, and I was unable to put it up by myself. Due to the noise, it gets an average rating. Not good, not bad. Does the job.
It provides really good air flow through my house. It fits nicely in the window
It could make less noise; directions could be easier to follow
Good Buy
Tuesday, August 23, 2011This is a good strong fan, and apparently well built (heavy!). We were concerned about the noise but with the fan in the window of a non-bedroom room upstairs, it serves as a wonderful whole house fan and the noise is not a problem.
Great Fan
Thursday, August 18, 2011Powerful fan, like the old school ones grandma had. Yes it makes noise like all the other reviews have proclaimed. DrillSpot had the best price and free shipping. Product arrived in great shape with all the parts. No complaints.
Cord location could be better, but I am over it.
Air King 9166
Tuesday, August 16, 2011Overall a pretty good fan. Not as great as the one it replaced, but better than the more recent ones we've seen. We built a frame to house it in front of the window, since the fan would not fit in the window opening.
The fan pulls air through the house well.
It has to be mounted somehow, since there is no part of the fan housing on which it can sit. We had to build a frame and set it in front of the window, as the fan would not fit in the window. It's designed to be permanently mounted to the window, which is a drawback for our situation.
Air King Fan
Monday, August 15, 2011This fan is TERIFFIC and was what we were looking for, as we were trying to find one to replace our 20 year old fan. It lives up to our expections and does a wonderful job on the exhaust in pulling out the hot air from our house. It's easy to install with the adjustable side wings fits any window. Would recommand this one to all our friends.
Fan is a well constructed with all metal parts to last. Was double boxed with no physical signs of damage. Super fast delivery!
Not For Bedroom Use
Monday, August 15, 2011A real air mover but when you move a lot of air you're going to make noise
Needs one lower speed
Moves Air
Thursday, August 11, 2011Got this to replace an old Vernco fan that I loved but can't find a new speed/in/out switch to replace the old bad unit. This unit certainly does move plenty of air. It certainly is not whisper quiet but then again neither was my Vernco but they both do the job of moving a great deal of air. Use the unit on exhaust exclusively and it does the job of getting cool air in through all open windows and exhausting the heat from the house.
Able to produce a nice amount of cfm to exhaust the hot air
Motor that can be lubricated to prolong it's longevity. The expansion wings are a bit on the flimsy side.
Great Fan
Tuesday, August 09, 2011The product performed just as advertised. This fan eliminated the installation of an attic fan. It was easy to install and its design really does allow it to remain in place during inclement weather.
Easy of installation and overall effect of the fan on the house. Cushioning and dampining material used in the design.
Possibly a little quieter; but it is not so loud as to interrupt conversation.
Review of Air King 20" Fan
Wednesday, August 03, 2011This fan gives a good amount of pull and does a good job of exhausting the floor. On the down side it is very loud and we only set it at the low speed when we are nearby. We also have a 20" fan from the 1960's made by Diehl that is still working very well and is much quieter. I was surprised and disappointed that in 50 years they have not improved the product but in fact it has gone backwards. I did read a previous review that the fan was loud so I will keep it and make do.
Has good power to exhasut a floor of a home
Noise level
Awesome
Wednesday, July 27, 2011Great product. The price is awesome compared to other whole house fan I have researched considering the performance of this product. The intake/exhaust option is fantastic. Setting the intake at #1 in the evening or morning blows cool air like an AC turbine, provided it is cool outside. However, the exhaust in my opinion is okay but not as powerful (may be its just that nature of the stale air inside). The finishing is nice and it looks very durable. Mounting was a little challenging because I have sliding windows. I think it best suites a drop window. Overall, I will definitely recommend this product over and over again.
The intake blows in cold air in the evening at an alarming rate
The exhaust could be improved upon. The noise level is quite high but I guess that's the trade off for high energy cost of the AC unit. I will suggest mounting in a room that is not used so frequently
Air King Whole House Fan
Wednesday, July 27, 2011More powerful than I expected. Also a bit louder than expected. Probably could have been happy with the smaller version. I love being able to close the window without removing the fan.
Allows you to close the window without removing the fan
Quieter
Window Exhuast Fan
Wednesday, July 27, 2011It's great! Pulls all the hot air out of the upper floor of my house and allows cool air to enter through the bedrrom window.
I like this fan because I don't have to use an air conditioner
Make it less noisy. Makes a lot of noise, not quiet.
Will Not Buy Another One
Tuesday, July 26, 2011It makes way too much noise!
I am not happy with it
Install plastic blades
Awesome Fan
Tuesday, July 26, 2011I ordered this fan for my dad and he loves it. It keeps the second floor of the house cooler. Two of his neighbors just ordered the fan too.
Way Too Loud And Big
Tuesday, July 26, 2011This fan is way too loud, even at it's lowest setting, to hear yourself think much less hear anyone else in the room. It is too big to fit in many windows so be sure to check that. I would return it but it's so heavy I'm sure it would leave me with nothing after paying the huge shipping charge and the substantial re-stocking charge.
Seems to be well built
Could be much quieter and the housing could be smaller
Looks Better Than It Is
Tuesday, July 26, 2011When my 30+ year old window exhaust fan died, the 9166 seemed like it would be an excellent replacement (same size, almost identical looking and with the same features). I've lived in-town, without AC, for over 20 years and relied on an old Sears 'whole-house' window exhaust fan to keep me comfortable throughout the summer -- it was perfect -- it cooled the house quickly and most summer nights even "low" was 'chilly'. But what a disappointment the Air King 9166 is! I gave it 2 stars only because it appears very well constructed -- mostly metal, heavy-duty looking. It sounds like it is very powerful -- and although noisier than my old Sears -- the sound gives the illusion that it's really working hard and drawing the air. Don't be fooled -- in the exhaust mode I can hardly feel a breeze from any of the open windows. I guess if my old Sears didn't do such a good job I might think the 9166 was good -- but I keep waiting for my house to cool down at night like it used to, but so far, no such luck. Sorry to say, but I guess they just don't make things like they used to. (On the plus side, Drillspot provided excellent, very quick service -- I would do business with them again!)
Looks like it is quality-made
If it actually worked as intended and cooled the house
Air King "Whole House" Fan
Tuesday, July 26, 2011Powerful fan, but a little too noisy with a bit of a high pitch whine. We had to install it in a room other than our bedroom to muffle the noise.
Powerful. Fits full window. Reversable, multiple speeds
Could use a lower speed or have a continuous speed control. Needs to reduce noise level and make it lower frequency. Could use a thermostat control so it would shut off when it reaches a set temperature
Does The Job
Tuesday, July 26, 2011My first unit came DOA out of the box but DrillSpot provided excellent customer service and sent a new one out immediately. The unit works best in intake mode. We have not been able to use it on the highest speed yet because it will literally blow everything in the room around. The exhaust mode works best when you only have one source of air far away. We initially tried to open too many windows to draw air across the entire house but that was not effective.
Moves a lot of air, easy to install
Wish is had a really slow mode that was quieter
Vibration
Sunday, July 24, 2011Just what I wanted. I purchased this item to replace a 20 year old fan of the same type. Ss far as performance goes, it works as advertised. The only problem is vibration and noise at 2nd and 3rd setting. Air King needs to develope a rubber stabilizing system for the fan. But works just fine at low speed. As far as Drillspot is concerned....AWESOME! Kept me informed at all stages of the process and had the best price on the net! Keep up the good work!
Love Air King
Sunday, July 24, 2011This fan is wonderful. We did not install it until about two weeks ago when the weather turned absurdly hot and humid for northern New York. The fan pulls enough air through the house to make the recent hot spell endurable. The rest of the time it does a great job cooling the upstairs before bedtime.
Its size and ability to move air
Powerful Fan
Wednesday, July 20, 2011Was looking for a rugged window fan, like the all metal one we had when I was young 30 years ago. Something that would last for 10+ years! This was the closest I could find. Only used now for a week, but fan quality appears high. Fan is VERY POWERFUL, more so than I expected! I wish it had an even LOWER setting as even at low, it (pulls more air and makes more noise) than the one it is replacing on High (another 20" fan). On HIGH, it moves wind through the doorway. I find however that even on low, and mounted in another room, it is more noisy than I would like for sleeping! Motor is metal and looks solid. Switch seems heavy duty. Blade balance is a little off, and I was supprised by this. On high, it actually vibrates the wall a little. It certainly will vent "whole house", but be sure you want something like this. CFM on low is higher than most other fans on high. I guess it's doint what it was designed for!
Seemed the most solid I could find on-line and in stores
Better balance of blade. Another speed lower than it has...in/out would make it much better.
I Am Happy
Wednesday, July 20, 2011Overall, I am pretty happy. Switch is weak in construction and the sliding side panels are a pain, they don't lock into place with the set screws like they should so taking it in/out of window when you have to is a pain. With the fan installed, closing the window during bad weather weather is not a good idea for a double hung window because the fan makes it very difficult to open again. I have to take the fan out of the window to reopen the window. While it does move a lot of air and eventually cool down the house, I was a little disappointed it didn't do it faster.
I can confirm all the other reviews, fan is strong, makes a lot of noise but moves a lot of air too
Now, it would be nice if there was some kind of differential temperature switch you could buy so you could set say for when it is 10 degrees colder outside than inside it would turn on and turn off when the same temp
Good and Bad
Tuesday, July 12, 2011I bought this fan to hopefully cool my garage enough to work in it. The fan is an excellent quality product, easy to install and powerful. I mounted it in a garage window. I guess it's just too hot here in N.C. because it does not seem to do the job. I have tried intake and exhaust, windows open and closed in all combinations and it seems to make little difference. Maybe I expected too much.
Quality, drillspot price, ease of install
Even though it has not done what I had hoped, nothing
Replaced Old Fan
Wednesday, July 06, 2011Great quality at a resonable price
Exactly what I needed to replace old one, actually better than old one
Where's The Rest Of It?
Saturday, July 02, 2011Fan is incredibly strong and the ability to mount inside a sill allowing you to close your window is great. Mounted in my finished attic window it creates a exhaust when all other windows are closed, but in the evening when you open up a couple windows on other floors it pulls in all the cool air like a constant breeze, it really is great.
Strong, great design, although it was missing components
All four of the housing screws were missing and I had to sift through the coffee can of screws in my garage to find the ones to finish putting it together
I Love This Fan
Friday, July 01, 2011The air movement power is definitely there, we'll see how the running cost is after I get the next electricity bill.
Air King 9166
Friday, July 01, 2011In the exhaust mode (3 speeds) this fan finds its best use. It appears to be capable of creating large suction force but needs to be strategically placed as the partial vacuum it creates reduces with distance. Its efficiency also depends on the area of the home. Mine is 2800sqft and for that size, does not create the kind of suction that makes it comfortable without a/c in an Arizona home on a summer night. But I feel if the temp difference between the inside & outside is over 20 degrees, it can reduce your electric bills considerably, ie atleast for 4 months in most parts of the country.
Not very noisy in low setting.
Less noisy in high speed. Take out the plastic and put in a harder material or atleast a good quality vibe dampener.
Great Product
Saturday, June 18, 2011Super fast delivery; was delivered three days after ordering. I would order from Drillspot again! The fan is just as advertised and works great. I put it in a basement window and it pulls ample air through the house on the lowest setting. I had considered putting in an attic fan but opted for this instead and I'm glad I did. As others have said, it is LOUD so you definitely don't want it in a bedroom. I can't hear it downstairs and it moves as much cfm as an attic fan. This is the way to go if you don't want something permanently installed. Easy to assemble and install.
Works great; good alternative to an attic fan and much less expensive
Metal housing instead of plastic housing. The plastic is fine but I think metal would be more durable
Almost Perfect
Friday, June 17, 2011I was replacing a 10+ year old Lakewood fan that I'd been very happy with, that finally died. My first impression of the air king was that its production quality seemed better. This fan seems to move more air, and on high is much quieter than the old Lakewood. The only downside is that its low setting is not very low -- the difference between the highest and lowest speeds is not that much. The result is that on "low" this fan is significantly noisier than the fan it replaced, which makes it a problem for people sleeping in our attic bedroom. I'm going to see if I can use a variable fan speed control with it to get a lower "low", but basically I'm pretty satisfied.
Quieter on highest setting than fan it replaced
Have a lower "low" setting, or be quieter on low
Attic Too Hot!
Thursday, June 16, 2011I bought the 20 inch for the attic and the 16 inch for my garage. The difference in temperature that these fans have made is amazing! They arrived within one week from the time that I ordered them. I could not use the screws that came with the fans because they were not sturdy enough. Overall, I am please with this purchase.
Construction, durability, fan speed, reversible
Stronger screws
Air King 9166 Review
Wednesday, June 15, 2011Pretty much as advertized. We have just installed four of them to ventilate a large hall in hot weather. This was the only model that would fit our 36" wide windows. They do move the air and were easy to install. The fans are noisier than I would like, but you can't move that much air without creating some noise.
Air King
Sunday, June 12, 2011Its a bit big for my window, but I will make it work by framing. Really moves some air, loud near it, but not from a distance.
Feel the breeze
More ways to mount it
Not Made In The USA
Saturday, June 11, 2011These are made in china, NOT a u.s. made product. I've seen several reviews saying this is made in the US. Air King is a US company, but manufactures some products overseas. China, not U.S.
Relief
Friday, June 10, 2011Powerful fan; sucks all the hot air out of the apartment
Fan is powerful, lightweight and attractive
Nice But Overpriced
Friday, June 10, 2011Does not move quite as much air as my Patton U2-20 but it is quieter with a lower pitch noise.
The Intake\Exhaust feature. The square fitting gives a nice fit to the window
The 7 position switch (3 intake, off, 3 exhaust) feels very cheap and I won't be surprised when it breaks.
Air King 9166
Tuesday, June 07, 2011Works like a charm, but I really could have used the mounting template that was NOT included in the box
It cools the entire upstairs
A tad less noisey
House Fan
Saturday, June 04, 2011High quality fan, metal housing and blades. If you're looking for a great fan this is it! Plus DrillSpot is the place for your needs.
All metal constuction, built to last
Moves Air
Thursday, June 02, 2011Moves the air well, but it has too much noise to be used in a room that you will be in. I didn't want to permanetly mount it so it is a little cumbersome to move in and out of the window. Otherwise it is good.
Good air movement
Air King 20'' Window Fan
Wednesday, May 25, 2011Works great pulls out the hot air in my house and cools the upstairs at night. Mounted in downstairs window.
Easy to in stall
If it had a thermastat to shut down fan
Made in USA Window Fan...UGH, awful
Monday, May 23, 2011I was all excited about this fan being manufactured in USA. Finally I thought, no more China crap. I was willing to pay more for a "GOOD FAN". I WAS WRONG. This fan is poorly designed and made. We can not even use high speed because it VIBRATES so bad. It is VERY loud and the main body is made of plastic. Screws that hold the shroud are tapped in to the plastic and needles to say, one of them was stripped out and laying in the box. The sliding side panels are poorly made and are supposed to be held in place with screws held thru the plastic. I really should have sent it back, but I am hoping I can balance the blades so we can use high speed. I had to drill new holes for mounting also. I am trying to make the best of it. If this is indicative of USA products, we are in deep trouble. This thing gives me a bad feeling in my stomach if I think about it too much.
Nothing
Everything
That Is The Question
Monday, May 23, 2011This fan was received double-boxed with NO physical signs of damage on either box.....but.....3 out of 4 of the rubber pads were missing, there was no template included and the switch knob was damaged. There was a plastic bag inside the box that the fan was supposed to be inside of. I condisered returning it, but it would have cost a fortune to ship it "35 lbs" UPS. It was necessary to frame the window with 2x6's and foam rubber so I could use the medium and high speeds. Otherwise it sent a vibration through the entire house. But it sure does move air. Even on exhaust-low, every curtain in every window is drawn in.
Its ability to move air
It should have arrived with no damage and all the parts
Whole House Window Unit
Sunday, May 22, 2011It is exactly what I'd been looking for, does a great job to reduce the need to turn the air on so soon. Wish it was quieter, but even attic fans are noisy, not any worse than that.
Works great ventilating the old air out
Quieter
Great Product
Tuesday, May 17, 2011Great Product! Really pulls air through the house. Easy to install and they shipped fast. (The fan is noisy at high speed, but I expected that)
Pleased!
Tuesday, May 17, 2011Fast shipping, very pleased with fan. Staying cool!
Good quality
King of Window Fans
Tuesday, May 17, 2011Got this fan to work as a whole house fan. I have a 2200 sf house with full basement. It seems to work well, but I will probably get another fan, one for upstairs and one for downstairs. On high it's somewhat loud, but it is a fan kicking out 3500 cfm! The thing is build like a tank. Great to see build quality like this still around. The areas where it is plastic, it is a good design and place for plastic, i.e. if the plastic parts were metal it wouldn't effect the performance but would make the fan twice as heavy. Mounting was simple and easy. Must be mounted solid for use on high and medium, there will be lots of vibration. It's a lot of moving mass being a metal blade. I could hear the fan coupling with my house and causing a low frequency (harmonic of 60 Hz) resonance in certain areas of my house. Have to isolate it more.
Air flow; Build quality; Easy to mount
Nothing I can see yet
Air King Exhust Fan
Tuesday, May 10, 2011A good product for the cost. I like the medal fan blades vs plastic as the volume of air moved is excellent. The exhaust fan that this Air King replaced had longer medal blades which seemed to pull a larger volume of air though the house. Its best to install this fan in an area where you will NOT be sitting near, such as a hallway or on top of stair case, as the fan makes a considerable amount of noise, even at low speed.
Cost, medal blades, reversable air flow, easy to install
Longer medal blades
Air King
Thursday, May 05, 2011Only had it a week, works great right now, the real test will be this summer. Ran only 1 time.
Great power
Could be all metal
Good For a Breeze Throught The House
Thursday, May 05, 2011When growing up we had an attic fan. I would have like to have installed one but the way our attic is, there is really no place for a cut out. This fan works to move the air through the house. I have a 3200 square foot house. I mounted it in the far end up stairs. As you would expect the more windows you open the less the breeze is. However, if you just have 2 or 3 windows open it works great for those rooms. I do also like that it mounts in the window and you can still open and close the window when the fan is not in use. No more raising the window and lifting a fan into it and hopeing it doesn't fall out. I just raise the window, turn on the fan and open a window upstairs and 2 downstairs and it keeps a breeze in the house. It's not as strong as an attic fan, but I bet if I installed 2 of these it would be.
Shaky
Tuesday, May 03, 2011The fan vibrates alot on high speed.
Everything but the vibration
Better balance of blades.
Moves Some Air
Monday, May 02, 2011I'm planning to use this fan to help cool my house vs. running the A/C all the time. On the Front Range in Colorado our nights are cool, even in the middle of the summer. I'll run this fan in the evenings on exhaust mode in a downstairs window (where I can't hear it), and open windows throughout the rest of the house to draw in the cool air. While I've used this method to cool a small condo with a box fan for years, it isn't yet warm enough that I've started using this 20" Air King to cool my new 2,400 sq. ft. house. But I've tested it out and it certainly moves some air. I can tell that it will do exactly what I need it to, and purchasing from DrillSpot.com was great.
Air King 9166 Whole House Fan
Monday, May 02, 2011This fan is everything I had hoped for. It is powerful and easy to install.
Price was the best on the internet. This is the only whole house window fan I found after extensive research
Good Fan
Monday, May 02, 2011This appears to be a good fan.
Its size and large volume of air movement
It could be quieter
Best Deal Around On This Fan
Thursday, April 28, 2011Very good product overall. The recommended installation seems a bit dicey given the high velocity of this fan....we'll see. I think it will need some better form of attaching to my window due to the width.
Cools the entire 1200 sq. ft. cabin with ease in about 45 minutes
Installation hardware is a little flimsy for a wide window. As others have said, it's a bit noisy on High, but I find it works quite well even on the Low setting
Best Fan Ever!
Friday, April 15, 2011This is just what I was looking for. I used this fan as soon as I got it.
This fan cools my 1400 sqft house easily on the low setting. The motor noise is hardly noticeable and it doesn't rattle or vibrate. It was a cinch to install.
Cooler House With Less Cost
Thursday, April 07, 2011This fan was easy enough to install and works great for drawing in the cooler air after the sun goes down which helps reduce our AC costs. Our house's windows are positioned such that they don't get a good cross-ventitation. When there's a cool breeze outside it wasn't helping inside. This large fan, placed in our front window, draws in the cool evening and night air from the shaded yard and costs a lot less than running the AC after dark. It's a little noisy in the living area but that's a small price for the money savings.
Easy to install, nice looking, easy to use, powerful
It's a little noisy but understandable for its size and where we have it positioned. This is not a drawback, for us anyway
Good Product, Does The Job But Very Loud
Tuesday, April 05, 2011Nice product heavily built quite motor but noisy fan blades.
Heavy Duty
Quiter
Good Fan
Monday, April 04, 2011Good Fan and arrived Quickly. Easy to install and really pulls air nicely. Works just fine on Low and not too loud. Of course it is loud on higher setting but so are attic fans if you are in the attic...
Moves air well
Works Well
Tuesday, March 29, 2011I live in a double wide Mobile Home and miss having an attic fan. This fan has worked just fine as a replacement. The fan is a little loud so don't place it in a tv zone or other area you wish to keep quite. This fan works a lot better than those rinky-dink fans you can buy at your local Wal-Mart or hardware store.
I like that it pulls in fresh air from outdoors.
This product would be better if it were quieter.
Great Fan
Monday, March 28, 2011Good construction, low noise, ran about 2 months then quit...bad motor
Metal construction, low noise
Motor is junk
Air King Whole House
Wednesday, March 16, 2011When received, the factory box was upside down and open. Open as if it was removed and put back in. Packing material disarrayed and so forth. My first thought was it would have things missing and be banged up. But it was in perfect condition! Wow! Installed in under 20 minutes. Opened two windows in front of house that night. We woke up cold in the night. It cooled the entire house down. Works great!! We live in Austin. It does get hot. Electric bills skyrocket in summer time. We are hoping this will bring us close to summer without air. If you are cooking and have this going, it draws odors right out! Great fan!! I bought THIS model because of online reviews. Glad I did. Shipping was super fast, by the way.
Works great

Whole House Fan and Work Shop Dust Extractor
Monday, December 13, 2010This fan is great. I have two of these in my house. One for the upstairs and one down stairs in the garage. They move large volumes of air efficently. The one in the garage is especially useful for removing wood dust while I am wood working. They were well worth the money and simple to install.
Simple to install and very efficent
It could be quiter
Kitchen Fan..tastic!
Thursday, December 02, 2010We had this fan installed into our kitchen window in our rather large apartment in NYC. It had been performing as an exhaust fan in our rather long but smallish kitchen. It really works. It also helps the rest of the apartment to get a little air circulation. No smells in the rest of the place when the fan is on. It will really be useful in the summer. We have air conditioning but to be able to get air circulation might help us lower our electricity bills in the summer. A very good buy.
Not as noisy as I would have suspected
Perfect so far
Tome Talk
Friday, November 19, 2010This is an excellent product, I was very surprised at how good the quaility was......good job.....
It is made very very well and will last
20" Whole House Fan
Thursday, November 04, 2010This is the second 20" I have had and it is better than the first one. It is quiet and has a better fan blade set up.
Better blade and quieter
Nice Transaction
Tuesday, October 19, 2010Works perfect! Cools our 2400 sq ft house down in a few hours even on low speed.
Noisy on high speed

Powerful, easy to install
It is fine the way it is
Great Service, Great Price!!!
Monday, October 04, 2010Thank you, Drillspot. Excellent price and prompt delivery.
Moves A LOT Of Air
Monday, September 27, 2010I'm using it to ventilate a wood shop space (pulling old air out and fresh air in through another opening) and I can't imagine ever needing the highest of the 3 speeds. It's like a plane taking off. The lowest speed is not overpoweringly loud in a shop setting, but in a home environment you'd want this away from the main living space. I suppose it would be in an attic or other remote location. Be aware that the outer flange is plastic, not sheet metal. The fan itself is all metal. Packaging is a little flimsy. I had to send one back (broken flange because the box was dropped or hit), but DrillSpot was great with the Fedex exchange, on them.
Qualified Approval
Tuesday, September 21, 2010Fan arrived quickly, but refused to run after one week of use. Replacement came slowly, but did come. Works so far.
This fan moves a LOT of air
It's pretty loud on high speed
Great
Friday, September 17, 2010Moves alot of air. A bit noisey on high
A real window fan. And the $$
Smoother operation.
WOW
Wednesday, September 15, 2010Just what the doctor ordered. It pulls all the stale air out of my 1400 sqft house.
The power, quality and ease of installation
Good Fan, Moves Air Well
Tuesday, September 14, 2010I found that this fan was very easy to install. The fan seems to move the air very nicely but it is rather loud. I ended up cutting up a towel and rolled up pieces to act like a buffer to stop the vibration. From other whole house fans I have seen they are all loud. Take the good with the bad.
Moves air well
Loud and vibrates
This Thing Rules
Tuesday, September 14, 2010I read a lot of great things about this fan and for the price they more then live up to them. It lets you turn off the AC unless its really hot/humid, and even then it makes the AC much more efficient. It circulates air for our entire home (1800 sq ft over 3 stories) from the first floor up and out the third floor rear window.
Whole House Fan
Tuesday, September 14, 2010With this past summer in the Northeast being the hottest on record, I wanted something that would help cool the house without killing my electric bill. Drillspot had the best price that I found and customer service and communication that was beyond my expectations. Great job!
Ease of installation in a window. Energy efficiency.
While it does a great job of exhausting air from the house, it is very loud. The motor itself isn't very loud, but a fan that is moving that much airflow is going to make a lot of noise. Just be prepared when considering placement.
Satisfaction...Relief From Heat!
Wednesday, September 08, 2010This is a real Window Fan like those long ago. It does a great job of exhausting and I like the fact that I can also turn the switch to a regular fan. Three speeds for each!
Everything. Price was better than other sites. Shipping was free and it got delivered quickly
Keep the price down and have free delivery and I am going to get another one next summer!!
Air King Fan
Wednesday, September 08, 2010After ordering this fanI must say that it's a great window fan and works even better in cooler conditions. The price for this fan is better viewed on Drillspot.com then any other website pricing it at $250 plus dollars. Having a Air King 20" fan gives a lot of air ventilation for your home and keeps things cool from 85 and below degree.
POWER
Monday, September 06, 2010Definitely moves a lot of air. Had replaced a Patton 20" 3 speed. Noisy but, live with it, saving from not using the A/C and fresh air makes up for it. If you have an apartment like I do, this is the unit for you.
POWER. Easy to install.
Great Customer Service
Friday, August 27, 2010The fan is sturdy and powerful, albeit a little noisy but the follow up customer service is great.
Shipped Quickly At Least
Thursday, August 26, 2010Product is good, however a couple of the mounting screws were missing... overall I'm satisfied though. Was shipped relatively quickly.
Fan Works Wonders
Tuesday, August 24, 2010Cools my 2800 square foot house quite quickly even on the low setting.
Solid construction
Installation was a bit of a challenge
Nice Fan
Saturday, August 21, 2010Product arrived in a few days, was easy to install, and performs well. The house is 2500 sq. ft. With the fan in a lower window in the rear of the house, it draws air nicely through the upper front windows. Not quite as powerfull as my last fan (it was a 24"), this one does the job. And the price was reasonable. Should be easy to remove in the fall.
Ease of installation - 4 screws and plug it in
It's pretty noisy at higher speeds
The Only Whole House Window Fan Out There
Friday, August 20, 2010Great fan thus far, but I do wish Air King made a version with a slower low speed. Like others have said, the low speed is too loud to use in a bedroom. This fan would be better in an attic or basement, unless you plan to use it in a very large bedroom. This fan will also generate excessive wind noise if used on intake in smaller rooms even with the door open. You would need to open other windows/doors to outside in other areas of the house to keep it quiet. I also wish Air King made the 16" version metal or maybe even something smaller like a 12" or 8".
Powerful, sturdy, mostly metal, American made
Needs a slower low speed
Here is an excellent fan!
Friday, August 20, 2010The product worked. It is an excellent buy.
It works
It is a fan, I am not sure what will improve a strong motored fan
Does The Job
Thursday, August 19, 2010At exhaust full power, the fan will create a constant inrush of air through an open window. After opening multiple windows, the breeze is close to undetectable in a 28x72 double wide. In order to cool my home by an appreciable amount, I have to leave it running at least a couple of hours. I dislike leaving it running because of the noise it makes on the strongest setting.
Blows a lot of air
Noisy
Air King Window Fan
Monday, August 16, 2010Shipping was quick -- and free! Fan pulls a lot of air. Noisy on most speeds, but this is not the type of fan to have in a room if there will be casual conversation within 15-20 feet. Good quality for the price.
Great Fan!!!
Monday, August 16, 2010Fan works great - really cooled the upstairs off!
Fine Fan, Good Price, Free Shipping
Monday, August 09, 2010We ordered the Air King 9166 fan to replace a Sears whole-house window fan that was dying after 25 or 30 years of nearly constant summer use. Drillspot's price was about $50 less than what Amazon and the manufacturer were charging, and shipping was free, so making a purchase decision was easy. We ordered the fan on a Sunday, it shipped on Monday, and it arrived on Thursday by Fed Ex Ground. Assembly was easy: All I had to do was slide the side panels out, turn them around, and slide them back in. Installation required screwing four wood screws into the window frame, lifting the fan into place, and tightening four screws to keep the side panels from vibrating. (The latter were conveniently located on the front of the fan, instead of being on the top and bottom like the screws on our old Sears fan.) I'm the world's clumsiest and least patient do-it-yourselfer, but I had no trouble installing the fan. The Air King 9166 looks and feels more solid than our old Sears whole-house window fan did, with a steel body and a design that makes it feel (and sound) rigid instead of wobbly when it's mounted in the window. It's somewhat noisy when it runs at full speed, but the noise is fan or propeller noise, with no squeaking or annoying vibration. And it really does move air: When it's on the exhaust setting, we can feel air rushing through open windows. Our dog loves lying at the foot of our attic stairs, where she can feel the wind blowing past her on its way from the open attic window to the fan. If you have a house or apartment with double-hung windows and don't find it practical to install air conditioning, the Air King 9166 fan is a great purchase--at least in areas of the country where temperatures drop at night and you can use the fan to replace hot air with cool air after dark.
Easy installation, moves a lot of air
A bit noisy on high and medium settings
A Real Air Mover
Monday, August 09, 2010This fan really moves some air. I have an older large 2-story farm house. With this fan in an upstairs window on high, it pulls from open windows on the opposite end of the house on the main level. My initial plan was to put in a whole house fan that mounts in the ceiling of the upper level. I decided to not do that due to the ceiling being plaster and the big mess cutting a hole in it would have created. Also another draw back with the regular whole house fan is the need to place vents in the roof to allow for air to be drawn in from the outside. The Air King 20" 3-Speed Whole House Window Fan is made the whole project a very simple one. Within 5 minutes we were in business. Thanks Drillspot.com for offering a great product at a very fair price.
Moves a high volocity of air
Cord placement
Heavy Duty Fan
Thursday, August 05, 2010Easy to install and does a great job!
Great fan
20" Exhaust Fan
Wednesday, August 04, 2010Excellent price (best on web) and fast free delivery. Installed using template to place mounting screws without problem and the build quality was clear from when I opened the box.
Very well made powerful fan. Big upgrade from my old one.
None except for a paint chip on the corner of one of the expansion panel.
Powerful, Quiet
Sunday, August 01, 2010After trying to figure out how to install this fan, we got it done in just a few minutes. It installs with only 4 screws and the directions were not very thorough, But we figured it out. It seems that with as heavy as this fan is, it would not be secure enough but it works well, no rattling or shaking. Setting #1 is all we need to draw air through the house from one window open in the far back room. The electrical cord comes out of the middle of the motor which is dumb looking. Our old one had this come out the side thru a channel so it wasn't so unsightly. I guess we'll get used to it.
Sturdy, well built, powerful
Installation directions, electrical cord placement
